M(h)aol have revealed their new album, Something Soft, and with it, their new single, ‘1-800-Call-Me-Back’. The Irish post-punk outfit have outdone themselves with this latest cut, which establishes an intentionally grating sound from its outset. They blend frantic distortion with the DTMF tones of an old phone to form a manic accompaniment to vocals that are almost drowned out entirely. “This track is about getting ghosted, which I personally think should be a criminal offence for anyone over the age of 25. The intro sound came from me and Sean watching the Euros and talking about football chants. I am not actually interested in football, but there’s something about international football where teams can’t buy people that I got super on board with that year.
